MOJ Scheme announces family mediation voucher extension
MOJ has recently announced further non-means-tested £5.4 million towards Family Mediation costs until June 2023 for children-only cases.
What is the family mediation voucher scheme?
The scheme was introduced in March 2021 and continues to offer £500 towards the costs of family mediation for eligible cases.
This is designed to support parties who may be able to resolve their family law disputes outside of court. The Government set up the scheme in response to Covid-19 to support recovery in the family court and to encourage more people to consider mediation as a means of resolving their disputes, where appropriate.
How does mediation work?
This involves couples working through their differences – led by a trained and accredited mediator – to reach agreements they are both prepared to accept, such as how to split assets or arrange child contact times, rather than have a judge decide for them. The specialist mediator helps participants to reach solutions tailored to their circumstances with many coming to agreements within 2 sessions.
It’s important to note that family mediation vouchers are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and are issued subject to eligibility criteria.
