More than 4.5 million people tested positive for COVID-19 during the 2020-2021 pandemic. It has been estimated that around two million of these could be suffering from the effects of long COVID.
Long COVID, or post COVID syndrome, is the suffering of COVID related symptoms for weeks or months after the infection has passed. Symptoms of long COVID include:
- Extreme tiredness (fatigue)
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain or tightness
- Problems with memory and concentration (“brain fog”)
- Difficulty sleeping (insomnia)
- Heart palpitations
- Pins and needles
- Joint pain
- Depression and anxiety
- Tinnitus, earaches
- Feeling sick, diarrhoea, stomach aches, loss of appetite
- A high temperature, cough, headaches, sore throat, changes to sense of smell or taste
For some, these effects can be debilitating and affect both their working and personal lives.
If you contracted COVID-19 at work and are now suffering the symptoms of long COVID, you may be able to make a claim for compensation.
Under the Health and Safety at Work Act, all employers have a duty of care to their employees. They must ensure they are protected from any potential health risks and hazards, including coronavirus. This is also true under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH). They are by law, required to ensure a safe working environment for staff and, if necessary, provide any personal protective equipment (PPE), which can limit exposure to any damaging substances.
All employers should have carried out their own detailed risk assessments, while also following and implementing any measures recommended by the government.
