Ministry of Justice publishes guide to divorce financial settlements
With increasing numbers of divorcing couples unable to obtain legal aid, or needing to limit their legal costs, the MoJ has published a guide, “Sorting out your finances when you get divorced”.
The guide is intended for people with no legal knowledge, and provides some legal guidance as well as more general relevant information to help people reach their own agreements.
Sir James Munby, the senior Family court judge, says that it should help those without solicitors “who may be confronting the seemingly daunting prospect of negotiating their own agreements in the context of divorce and family breakdown. It provides a succinct summary of the law for those who cannot afford legal advice to reach financial agreements without the need for protracted court proceedings.”
